Passing the cup to save lives
The members of Oregon Women’s Sailing Association are hard at work again in their tenth year, intent on making Sail for the Cure 2009 bigger and better than ever before.
“Our goal is to increase our numbers to 500 participants and $50,000 this year,” said Sail for the Cure Chairwoman Jeanine Hohn. “We want to continue growing the event because we know how important it is for women in Oregon and southwest Washington to receive the lifesaving breast cancer education and assistance that Susan G. Komen for the Cure provides.
“Sail for the Cure is a major contributor to Komen for the Cure, and we want to make sure Komen’s services continue to get to those women in greatest need,” Hohn added.
This year’s event is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, with online registration beginning June 15.
In addition to the annual on-the-water game, silent and live auctions, hair donations, food and entertainment, Sail for the Cure 2009 will have a more-intense focus on fund-raising through pledges.
Participants who register on the www.sailforthecureoregon.net web site will be able to make their pledges online. They will also be able to refer non-event-participant friends and family members to the web site so they, too, can pledge to save lives.
“Our theme this year is ‘Our Cup Runneth Over.’ We believe that is true, and so we are also focusing our efforts on increasing the number and amount of pledges received in 2009,” Hohn explained.
This year’s pledge drive will be a spin off of the event’s tenth anniversary.
“We are asking participants to ask 10 of their friends to pledge $10 each, and then in turn to ask their friends to pledge $10, and so on. If all 500 participants find just 10 others to pledge $10 each we could raise $50,000 in pledges alone,” Hohn said. “That would easily meet our fund-raising goal, without putting a huge burden on any one person.”
The annual event has raised more than $200,000 for the southwest affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure since 2000, and continues to successfully introduce new women sailors to an incredible sport each year.
“It is an awesome way for Portland’s sailing community to gather together each year to usher out one beautiful sailing season after another. We are so privileged to have each other and to share such fun and fabulous experiences together,” Hohn concluded. “Sail for the Cure is a wonderful demonstration of a community of people coming together to share what they love, and support an amazing cause – saving women’s lives.”
